DURATION OF THE PROGRAMMES

  1. The BSc. programme shall be for a duration of four years (8 semesters).
  2. The HND and diploma programmes shall be for a duration of three years (6 semesters).
  3. Candidates with diplomas who intend to pursue BSc. programmes shall be enrolled for a two-year top-up programme.
  4. Certificate programmes runs concurrently with the remedial classes. It is worth noting that certificate students, upon satisfying the minimum requirement admission, shall proceed to do the diploma, HND or degree programme. Work done at the certificate level shall be credited to him/her. (Duration: Four semesters).

GENERAL ACADEMIC REGULATIONS

THE SEMESTER CALENDER

The semester year shall run from September to June. The first semester shall commence in the second week of September and end in the third week of January. Students shall be allowed a four-week break and resume academic work in the third week of February. The second semester shall commence about the third week of February and end in the third week of June. Students are allowed a two-week break from the 20th of December to 2nd January.

The Academic Board of Medicare College of Applied Sciences is fully aware of graduate unemployment. For this reason, we offer professional programmes with high prospects of employment for our graduates. Besides, graduates have the potential to establish their own businesses after graduation..

HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT (HIM)

  2. Certificate Health Information Management
Health Information Management is a relatively recent addition to Allied Health Professions Council programmes. For this reason, Health Information Management professionals at all levels of education and credentialing can expect to be in high demand.

Graduates of Health Information Management are prepared for a variety of health information professions in traditional and non-traditional settings, including (but not limited to) Health Information Analyst, Information Auditor, Clinical Data Analyst, Privacy Officer, Compliance Specialist, Health Information Systems Trainer, and Information Systems Director.

Health Information Managers (HIM) process information on patients from OPD, Wards, laboratory, dispensary, surgery, maternity and other segments of the hospital and present them as data to enable health professional understand health issues. Furthermore, HIM personnel play advocacy roles on health issues in the health sector, and provide inputs to the budget of health and other allied institutions. Besides health and research institutions, HIM personnel are employed at District Assemblies, Regional Health Directorates and the Ministry of Health to process information received from individual health centres in the districts and regions.

Data may not be available in Ghana at the moment, but in the USA, approximately 12,000 to 50,000 new jobs are anticipated by 2017. As the health sector in Ghana expands it is anticipated that health information managers will be in high demand. The HIM program at MCAS prepares students for diploma education in health information management, health informatics, and healthcare administration

MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY (MLT) For Science Students Only

  1. BSc. Medical Laboratory Technology
  2. Diploma Medical Laboratory Technology
  3. Certificate Medical Laboratory Technology
The certificate programme is designed for beginners who do not meet our minimum requirements for admission. If they so desire to proceed to pursue Diploma or Degree programmes, certificate students would be assisted to undertake remedial classes to better their grades.

The prospects of finding employment is bright for graduates as many hospitals and clinics in the country are understaffed, or have employed staff who do not really have the requisite qualification. Other healthcare facilities do not operate laboratories because they cannot find qualified staff to run them. MCAS is renowned for providing excellent tuition and mentoring.

PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE (HND) For Science Students Only

Previously called Dispensing Technology, Pharmaceutical Science students are trained in pharmacology, pharmaceutics as well as drugs formulation and dispensing.

Graduates have job prospects in health institutions such as hospitals, pharmacies, chemical shops and pharmaceutical companies.

SCIENCE AND INDUSTRIAL LAB. TECHNOLOGY (HND) For Science Students Only

Students are trained for employment in industry, universities and colleges, research institutions, as well as second cycle institutions. In these institutions students usually take on analytical roles in laboratories, and are often used to instruct students and other personnel.

With the One District One Factory concept proposed by government taking shape, the prospects for employment for graduates is very bright.

FASHION DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (HND) For Arts, Business, Home Economics and Science students.

Fashion Design and Technology is a practical-oriented programme designed to train FDT professionals who plan toward self-employment. The programme trains students to create and execute concepts in fashion design. It is noteworthy that countries like India, China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and many others make billions in garment exports to Europe, America and many other countries every year. Fashion Design and Technology opens avenues to these markets and also other job opportunities in Ghana.

HEALTH ASSISTANT OR NURSING ASSISTANT (Certificate) For Arts, Business, Home Economics and Science students.

A clinical health or Nursing assistant provides clinical and administrative support to supervising medical professionals in a variety of health care settings, including physicians’ offices, hospitals, and clinics. Clinical health assistants may prepare medical instruments and supplies as well as examining rooms. They may mix injections and give them to patients. Clinical health or Nursing assistants may record patient data and offer support to doctors performing medical procedures or exams.
